Hemingway Daiquiri Recipe

The Hemingway Daiquiri is a drink that is sure to please. It is often called the El Floridita Daiquiri, but most people don’t know that.

The place that invented the drink is often ignored, while people celebrate those who drank it. As someone who has an English degree, I am happy to drink a Hemingway Daiquiri. This light and refreshing drink is great when you imagine yourself on safari (or just visiting Cuba).

The Hemingway Daiquiri is a combination of rum, lime juice, and grapefruit juice. It has to be made with White Rum (not Gold), but you can use either light or dark rum if you prefer. There are two conflicting stories about why it is called the Hemingway Daiquiri.

The first story says that Hemingway loved this drink so much in Cuba that he got his own private stock of White Rum at El Floridita bar.

The second story says that Papa was being interviewed by a journalist who was part of the mob known as “The Crooks Club” and they both drank many Daiquiris while they were talking.

Either way, the Hemingway Daiquiri is one of my favorite summer drinks to make at home when I am out on my boat drinking cocktails before having dinner outside with friends and family. My only problem with the daiquiri recipe below is that I don’t have enough good glasses for them all! So, start making yours today!

Ingredients:

1 ½ oz white rum

1 oz grapefruit juice

¾ oz lime juice

Method:

Shake ingredients in an iced cocktail shaker until well combined

Add ice cubes

Shake again

Strain into chilled glass

Garnish with fruit wedge or cherry

Optional:

You can also add sugar syrup for more sweetness. However you like your Daqiquiri, I enjoy mine picante style — Spicy!
